Power & Speed

Briefing

The Power & Speed course is split into two parts: the Power section which contains technical obstacles, and the Speed section made up only of jumps.

The Power section is not timed. The handler must direct the dog through the Power section of the course taking care not to fault any of the obstacles.  Faults earned in the Power section will be added to the team’s final score.

The Speed section is a timed course. The goal is to run the jumpers-style course as fast as possible. Faults we be added to the team’s score.

There will be a maximum course time of 2 minutes to complete both sections of the Power and Speed course.   Any team taking longer than the maximum time will be eliminated.

There will be a maximum course time of 2 minutes to complete both sections of the Power and Speed course.   Any team taking longer than the maximum time will be eliminated.

Call Direct & Send

Briefing

In Call, Direct and Send a handler must call, direct, and send his dog to perform three series of obstacles.

Call – The Call is a lead-off at the start line, requiring the handler to call the dog over the opening obstacles #1 and #2. To receive the bonus for this section of the course the dog should be placed on a wait or stay at the beginning of the course, behind the start line, while the handler leads out to a point on the course past the first containment line to call the dog.

Direct – The Direct is a mid-course gamble sequence of obstacles #9 through #11. To receive the bonus for this section of the course, the handler must direct the dog over the sequence of obstacles without crossing the containment line.

Send – The final sequence for the course is the Send over obstacles #16-#18. To receive the bonus for this section of the course, the handler must send the dog over the obstacles without crossing the containment line.

Faults and Bonuses

Faults shall be assessed according to the TDAA schedule of faults for standard courses. A 20-point fault will be assessed for each failure to perform. The four-paw safety rule will not be in effect for this game.

Each bonus is worth 10 points. No bonus will be given for any sequence in which the handler faults the containment line. The judge will call “Fault” to indicate the line has been faulted. The judge will call “Bonus” for each bonus sequence successfully performed.

Scoring

Call Direct & Send is scored Time, Plus Faults, Less Bonuses. The dog with the lowest score wins.

Qualifying

The dog qualifies so long as the total score is less than the Qualifying Course Time:

What’s My Line

Briefing

The objective of What’s My Line is to perform all of the obstacles on the field without repeating or omitting any as quickly as possible. The dog earns one point for each obstacle performed successfully. Each obstacle has the same value, regardless of the difficulty of performance and regardless of the number assigned to the obstacle.

If an obstacle is performed twice, the dog will lose a point for the performance.

If an obstacle is faulted, the team will receive no point for that obstacle. Further, the obstacle will be counted as used/completed. So the dog would earn an additional fault if the obstacle is repeated.

A four-paw commitment to a contact obstacle will commit the dog to the performance of that obstacle. Under this rule, if a dog commits to a contact obstacle with all four-paws, then bails off, he has committed to that obstacle. While the on-and-off refusal will not be faulted, the dog must be directed to finish the contact obstacle.

Time will be started and stopped when the dog crosses the start and finish lines. Note that the start finish lines run on two sides of the course. The team may start or finish anywhere along these lines. Small dog teams will have 60 seconds and Large Dog teams will have 55 seconds to complete the task.

Scoring

What’s My Line is scored Points, Then Time. Time is a tie-breaker only. The team with the most points will win.

Weakest Link

Briefing

The objective of Weakest Link is to score as many points as possible in the allotted time. Only “banked” points will count toward the final score. Small dogs have 65 seconds; big dogs have 60 seconds. Time starts when the dog crosses the start line.

Each obstacle taken by the dog must be worth as much as or more than the previous obstacle taken. The dog’s potential score will increase as each obstacle value is added to the overall total. The dog can’t keep or count on these points until they are “banked”. Obstacle point values are:

  • Jumps, 2 points
  • Tire or tunnels, 4 points
  • Contact obstacles, 6 points
  • Weave poles, 8 points
  • Gamble #1 Square Numbers 1-4 – 22 points
  • Gamble #2 Round Numbers 1-4 – 24 points

Points are banked when the dog performs the tire.  Banked points are kept secure toward the final score and cannot be lost. When points are banked, the potential points score is set to zero, and point accumulation begins again, to the expiration of time. Each sequence banked must be unique. That means there must be at least one difference from any sequence previously banked. Back-to-back obstacle performances are allowed.

If a dog faults any obstacle all potential points are lost. Banked points can never be taken away from the dog. Performance faults are based on Superior rules. In addition the dog shall be faulted for failing to bank points before the final whistle.

When a dog faults the judge will call “fault”. The handler is obligated to direct the dog to the first obstacle in a new sequence to earn potential points. The handler does not have to bank points before beginning again after a fault.

If the containment line in either gamble is faulted, the point value of the obstacles within the gamble are considered under their regular point value (see below). Otherwise, the entire gamble is considered as one obstacle worth 22 or 24 points, depending on the direction taken.

If a bar is dropped on a jump, that jump is out of play for the remainder of the game with the exception that a bar knocked within a gamble will be picked up or reset if possible. If not reset, the dog must be directed through the uprights of the jump in order to receive points for a successfully completed gamble.

Scoring

The Weakest Link is scored Points, Then Time. The dog with the most points is deemed the winner.

Heinz 57

Briefing

The purpose of Heinz 57 is to score 57 points as quickly as possible, without going over or being under. Time starts when the dog crosses the start line. A total of 55 seconds will be allowed for small dogs; 50 seconds for big dogs.

Point Values are:

  • 1 point for jumps
  • 2 points for pipe tunnels and the tire
  • 3 points for contact obstacles
  • 5 points for weave poles
  • The chute is the doubling obstacle and has no individual points

Obstacles can be taken twice for points; back-to-back performances are not allowed. Another obstacle must be performed before the dog can be redirected to an obstacle.

The collapsed chute is the doubling obstacle and can be taken at any time during the dog’s run but may only be taken twice, like any other obstacle. Successful completion of the doubling obstacle doubles ALL points earned to that point, including a previously doubled score.

If the dog touches the table at any time after earning at least one point scoring ends and the run is over.

TDAA rules will be used for performance faults. Any error must be fixed or the dog will not earn points for the obstacle. With the exception of jumps, if a dog commits to any obstacle he is required to complete the performance of that obstacle.

Scoring

Heinz 57 is scored points, then time. Any points over or under 57 will be subtracted from 57 for the dog’s final score.

Qualifying

At all levels, 57 points is required to qualify.

Quidditch

Briefing

Big dogs will have 55 seconds and small dogs 60 seconds to complete at least three numbered sequences. When time expires the dog must be directed to the table to stop time. The point values for each of the sequences are 15, 20, and 25 points. Each sequence can be successfully completed only once; but all four sequences may be completed.

Each obstacle has individual point values that are earned by a team if a sequence is only partially completed prior to time expiring.

• 1 point for jumps

• 3 points for tunnels

• 5 points for contact obstacles and weave poles

Upon successful completion of a sequence the dog can earn bonus points for a successful performance of a tire; the ‘Beater’ bonus, for which the team will earn an additional 25 points if the tire is performed from behind the containment line. Refusals will be faulted on the tire, but nowhere else on course. The initial direction of the dog’s approach to the tire will define the run-out plane of the obstacle for the purpose of judging refusals. If a dog commits a refusal on the tire, the Beater bonus is lost. If the handler faults the containment line, the Beater bonus is lost.

After attempting the Beater bonus the team should attempt another sequence. If the team completes three different sequences they will earn a ‘Keeper’ bonus of 50 points. Note: the bonus points earned or missed by the completion of the tire do not affect ability for a team to earn the Keeper bonus.

A dropped bar, some off-courses (see wrong course rule, below) or a missed contact will be considered a sequence fault. The team can immediately reattempt the same sequence or move to another sequence.

When time expires no new points can be earned.

The Bludgers Rule

  1. A Bludger (wrong course obstacle) performed during the performance of an individual sequence shall result in a sequence fault. No points are earned for the performance of any individual obstacle unless the sequence is not completed due to expiration of time.
  2. Performance of a Bludger after the successful completion of a sequence on the way to the Beater (tire) shall be considered a fault of the Beater. The ability for the team to earn the Beater bonus is lost. The team should proceed to the next sequence, or to the table if appropriate.
  3. If the wrong course occurs: Bludgers (wrong courses) shall not be faulted: between the starting line and the first obstacle of a numbered sequence; between the Beater and the first obstacle of a numbered sequence; between the Beater and the table (to stop time).
  4. No points shall be earned for the performance of any Bludger.

Expiration of Time

If the whistle sounds prior to the completion of the three sequences, the dog should be directed to the table. The team will earn individual points for obstacles completed prior to the sounding of the whistle. When the dog touches the table, time will stop. No table performance is required.

The Golden Snitch

If a team successfully completes all three sequences, earns all three 25 point Beater bonuses, and touches the table prior to the time whistle sounding, the team will earn the Golden Snitch bonus of 75 points.

Scoring

Quidditch is scored Points, Then Time. The dog with the most points wins. In the case of a tie, the dog with the shortest time will be the winner.

A perfect score requires completion of all three sequences and successful performance of the Beater bonus. The scoring notation would look like this: 15-25-20-25-25-25-50-75.

Qualifying

• Games I: 55 points

• Games II: 75 points

• Games III: 95 points

Power & Speed

Briefing

The Power and Speed course consists of two separate parts: Power contains technical obstacles and tunnels, and Speed section contains jumps and tunnels.

The Power section of the course is not timed.  The handler must direct the dog through the Power section of the course, with the goal being to complete the Power section without faulting any of the obstacles.  Faults earned in the Power section of the game will be added to the team’s final score.

The Speed section of the game is timed. The goal is to run the jumpers-style course as fast as possible. Faults we be added to the team’s score.

There will be a maximum course time of 2 minutes to complete both sections of the Power and Speed course.   Any team taking longer than the maximum time will be eliminated.

Scoring

Power and Speed is scored time plus faults. The team with the lowest score wins. The will be judged under TDAA Superior rules; (refusals on contact obstacles, for example are faulted).

Qualifying

The team will qualify if the dog’s score (time, plus faults) is less than or equal to the established Qualifying course times (QCT):

Scoring

The dog’s total time, plus faults earned on the course, minus bonuses earned, will determine the dog’s final score. The dog with the lowest score, regardless of other faults on the course, will be the winner.

Qualifying

The dog qualifies so long as the total score is less than the Qualifying Course Time (QCT), using rates of travel defined in the TDAA rules and regulations. QCT for this course shall be:

Games I 4″ / 8 “ 53
12′′ / 16′′ 49
Games II 4″ / 8 “ 35
12′′ / 16′′ 30
Games III 4″ / 8 “ 14

What’s My Line

Briefing

The objective of What’s My Line is to perform all of the obstacles on the field without repeating or omitting any. The dog earns one point for each obstacle performed successfully. Each obstacle has the same value, regardless of difficulty of performance or the number assigned to the obstacle.  Numbers are for the judge’s reference only, and in no way suggest a sequence for running the course.

If an obstacle is faulted, the dog will receive no point for that obstacle; and the obstacle considered completed.  If an obstacle is performed more than once the dog will lose a point for each additional performance.  If the dog commits to an obstacle with all four paws he is committed to that obstacle.

Time starts and stops at the start/finish line. 4 and 8 inch dogs will have 60 seconds and 12 and 16 inch dogs will have 55 seconds to collect points.

Scoring and Qualification

What’s My Line is scored Points, Then Time. Time is a tie-breaker only. The team with the most points will win.  To qualify the dog must earn 14 points.

Weakest Link

Briefing

The objective of The Weakest Link is to score as many points as possible in the allotted time.

·        Jumps, 2 points

·        Tire or tunnels, 4 points

·        Contact obstacles, 6 points

·        Weave poles, 8 points

·        Gamble #1 Square Numbers 1-4 – 22 points

·        Gamble #2 Round Numbers 1-4 – 24 points

Qualifying

  • Games I – 40 or more points

Heinz 57

Briefing

The purpose of Heinz 57 is to score 57 points as quickly as possible, without going over or being under 57 points.

Time starts when the dog crosses the start line. 55 seconds will be allowed for small dogs, 50 seconds for big dogs.

With the exception of jumps, if a dog commits to any obstacle he is required to reattempt that obstacle until it is not faulted. No new points will be awarded until that obstacle has been performed.

Jumpers

Briefing

The Jumpers course consists of a series of jumps and tunnels that should be completed in numeric order, hopefully with no faults.  Faults will be added to the teams score.  To qualify the team’s total score must be equal to or less than the QCT set by the judge.   Jumpers is scored time plus faults the team with the lowest score win’s.

The tournament in Wichita Falls was a great competition. Seven games and three standard courses designed by TDAA judges Wayne Van Deusen and Deb Auer provided considerable drama.

The final 40 dogs were placed by tournament rules. The winner of each jump height earned the Teacup National Agility Champion (TNAC) title.
